 ‘Sir’, I said, ‘twenty years ago I heard you say that one must enter the house of death with all one’s senses fully alert, not when one is old and decrepit...’

“先生”，我说，“20年前我听你说过，一个人应该在所有感官都充分警觉的时候便踏入死亡之所，而不是要等到他年老体衰的时候……”

 

‘Yes’, he replied. ‘For me, the line dividing life and death has always been very thin.’

“是的”，他回答，“对于我来说，划分生与死的界线一直都非常模糊。”

‘What would happen if you were told that you were going to die tomorrow morning?’ I asked.

“如果你被告知你明天早上就会死去，那会发生什么？”我问。

 

He smiled, ‘Nothing, I would live exactly as before. I ask nothing of the world. Perhaps that is the answer. I want nothing from human beings or the gods. Nothing from anyone. If death came just now and said, “You go this evening”, it would be all right.’

他笑着说：“什么都不会发生，我还是会完全像以前那样生活。我不会向这世界要求任何东西。可能这就是答案。我对人类或者神明都一无所求，不会想从任何人那里得到任何东西。如果死亡此刻到来，并且说：‘今晚你就会死去’，那也完全没关系。”
