 ‘Sir’, I said, ‘twenty years ago I heard you say that one must enter the house of death with all one’s senses fully alert, not when one is old and decrepit...’

“先生”，我说，“20年前我听你说过，一个人应该在所有感官都充分警觉的时候便踏入死亡之所，而不是要等到他年老体衰的时候……”

 

‘Yes’, he replied. ‘For me, the line dividing life and death has always been very thin.’

“是的”，他回答，“对于我来说，划分生与死的界线一直都非常模糊。”

‘What would happen if you were told that you were going to die tomorrow morning?’ I asked.

“如果你被告知你明天早上就会死去，那会发生什么？”我问。

 

He smiled, ‘Nothing, I would live exactly as before. I ask nothing of the world. Perhaps that is the answer. I want nothing from human beings or the gods. Nothing from anyone. If death came just now and said, “You go this evening”, it would be all right.’

他笑着说：“什么都不会发生，我还是会完全像以前那样生活。我不会向这世界要求任何东西。可能这就是答案。我对人类或者神明都一无所求，不会想从任何人那里得到任何东西。如果死亡此刻到来，并且说：‘今晚你就会死去’，那也完全没关系。”

我 们一定要找出爱的真谛，如果我们不能爱，我们就永远不可能深思、专注，我们也永远不可能体恤。你明白什么是体恤别人吗？譬如你看见路上有一颗尖锐的石头， 许多双赤脚从上面走过，你把尖石移开，不是因为有人要求你这么做，而是因为你能体会那些人的感觉，不管那些人是谁，也许你永远不会再碰到他们。
 
种 一棵树并且关爱它，看着河水流动，欣赏大地的丰美，观察飞鸟的美妙翱翔，有一颗敏感的心，对生命的伟大律动开放胸怀――这一切都需要自由。你能爱才能有自 由，没有爱就没有自由；没有爱，自由只是没有价值的观念。所以只有那些了解并消除内心依赖的人，才明白爱是什么，才能得到自由。只有这些人才能带来一个新 的文明，不同的世界。

We have become far too clever. Our brains have been trained to be verbally, intellectually, very bright. They are crammed with a great deal of information, and we use this for profitable careers. A clever, intellectual person is praised, shown honour. Such people seem to usurp all the important places in the world; they have power, position, prestige; but their cleverness betrays them at the end. In their hearts they never know what love is or deep charity and generosity, for they are enclosed in their vanity and arrogance. This has become the pattern of all highly endowed schools. A boy or girl in a conventional school gets trapped in modern civilization and is lost to the whole beauty of life.
我们已经变 得太过聪明了。在言辞上和智力上，我们的脑子被训练得非常机智。它被塞满了大量的信息，而我们用这些信息在职业上谋取利益。一个聪明的、智力发达的人会得 到赞赏与尊敬。这样的人似乎占据了世界上所有重要的位置，他们拥有权力、地位、声望，但是他们的聪明最终会背叛他们。他们心中从来都不知道什么是爱或者深 切的仁慈与慷慨，因为他们被囚禁在自己的自负和傲慢里面了。这已经成了所有私立学校的模式。常规学校里的男孩或女孩被现代文明所困，对整个生命的美无动于 衷。
 
When you wander through woods with heavy shadows and dappled light and suddenly come upon an open space, agreen meadow surrounded by stately trees, or a sparkling stream, you wonder why man has lost his relationship to nature and the beauty of the earth, the fallen leaf and the broken branch. If you have lost touch with nature, then you will inevitably lose relationship with another. Nature is not just the flowers, the lovely green lawn or the flowing waters in your little garden, but the whole earth with all the things on it.
当 你在光线幽暗、树影斑驳的森林中漫步，突然看到一片开阔的空间 ，一片被高耸的树木围绕的绿草，或一条活泼的小溪，你会奇怪为什么人类失去了与自然的联系，与大地、落叶和断枝之美的联系。如果你失去了与自然的接触，那 么你必然会失去与其他人的联系。自然不仅仅是你小花园里面的花朵、可爱的绿地或流水，而是整个地球上的一切。


We consider that nature exists for our use, for our convenience, and so lose communion with the earth. Sensitivity to the fallen leaf and to the tall tree on a hill is far more important than all the passing of examinations and having a bright career. Those are not the whole of life. Life is like a vast river with a great volume of water without a beginning or an ending. We take out of that fast-running current a bucket of water, and that confined water becomes our life. This is our conditioning andour ever-lasting sorrow.
我 们认为自然是为了我们的使用和方便而存在的，因此失去了和地球的交流。对落叶和山间巨树的敏感远比通过所有的考试和拥有一个吸引人的职业重要得多。那不是 生活的全部。生活就像一条奔流的大河，没有起点也没有终点。我们从那个急流中取出一桶水，这点有限的水变成了我们的生活。这是我们的局限和永远的悲伤。
 
The movement of thought is not beauty. Thought can create what appears to be beautiful—the painting, the marble figure or a lovely poem—but this is not beauty. Beauty is supreme sensitivity, not to the sense of one's own pains and anxieties, but encompassing the whole existence of humanity. There is beauty only when the current of the "me" has completely dried up. When the "me" is not, beauty is. With the abandonment of the self, the passion of beauty comes into being.
思 想的运动不是美。思想能够创造看上去很美的东西——绘画、大理石雕像或动人的诗句——但这些不是美。美是最高的敏感性，不是对自己痛苦和焦虑的感受，而是 对包含着整个人类的生命敏感。只有在"自我"之流完全枯竭的时候美才会存在。当"自我"不在时，美就存在了。随着对自我的放弃，美的激情就生起了。

使孩子自在而无惧地成长

问：孩子们告诉我，他们在村子里看到一些奇怪的现象，譬如着魔之类的事，他们对鬼怪、精灵等都很害怕，他们常常问些有关死亡的事，我们该如何回答他们？
 
克： 在适当的时候，我们会对死亡做更多的探索。但是你必须知道，恐惧是件极不寻常的事。这些孩子一定是听见父母及其他长辈谈到了鬼，否则他们大概不会活见鬼。 可能又有别的人告诉你有关着魔的事，可是要明白这些事，你未免太年轻了。这些都不是你自己的经验，都是长辈加诸于你的印象。通常这些年长的人对自己所说的 事也没有什么概念，他们只不过在一些书籍里读到，就以为自己知道了。这个现象引发了另一个问题：世上是否有不被过去的事件混淆的经验？如果某种经验被过去 所混淆，充其量只是过去的延续，而不是原创的经验。
 
当 你们和孩子相处时，重要的是你们不该把自己谬误的观念、自己对鬼怪的想法、自己特殊的意见及经验加诸在他们的身上。这是很难避免的事，因为老年人花很多时 间诉说这些在人生中不重要的事，逐渐地，他们把自己的焦虑、恐惧及迷信传给了孩子，孩子自然会重复大人所想的。重要的是，年长的人对这些自己都不明白的 事，就不该在孩子面前提起；相反的，他们应该制造一种气氛，使孩子可以在其中自在而无惧地成长。
